Previously operating under the NSW Dental Assistants (Professional) Association, we have revised our constitution and rebranded to become the Dental Assistants Professional Association Inc, (DAPA) we invite membership of dental assistants throughout Australia who want to add their voice to the profession and promote the career of dental assisting in a national forum.

The Dental Assistants Association was originally formed over 50 years ago to work for the general advancement of our members and further the professional, social and industrial welfare of dental assistants and receptionists. Today, having rebranded and revised its constitution, the Dental Assistants Professional Association offers membership to dental assistants and practice managers working in private practice, public health and defence forces throughout Australia. The Association offers training, professional development, conference and events, advice and support for industrial and employment enquiries, and a national certification register of qualified professional staff. We are a Registered Training Organisation with Australian Skills Quality Authority to offer Nationally Recognised and accredited courses. The Dental Assistants Professional Association is the national voice and peak body for Dental Assistants in Australia. Through advocacy, employment advice, education and training, events and professional development we provide a network of opportunity and support for the dental staff.

Governance

The Dental Assistants Professional Association (DAPA) is a Not for Profit Association registered in NSW and governed by a Board of Directors who are nominated by members and elected for a four year term. Directors are volunteers (unpaid) who are bound by the DAPA Constitution and the Code of Conduct for Board Directors. The DAPA Constitution is reviewed and updated on an ongoing basis. Changes to the constitution must be passed by Special Resolution at a General Meeting of the membership. Such changes require a 75% majority vote. You can download a copy of the current Constitution here.

As a Not for Profit Association, DAPA is subject to the legal requirements of the Associations Act (2001) and reports annually to the Australian Charities and Not-for-profit Commission (ACNC) and Office of Fair Trading (OFT). The DAPA is listed on ASIC and operates in all states and territories with an ABRN 166 156 183.

Infection Prevention and Control

There has been considerable publicity recently concerning the responsibility of the dental practitioner to ensure infection prevention and control measures are in place. Although it is ultimately the practitioners responsibility, it is the staff who are undertaking these processes and must maintain the required standards and techniques. It is critically important that each member of the dental team understands the "where, how and why" of infection control legislation.

Resulting from this Dental Board directive, DAPA has received numerous calls seeking advice and assurance that their practice procedures are compliant with legislation. DAPA can assist you and provides accurate advice and guidance to implement good protocedures in the dental practice which are based on the AS/NZS4187 or AS/NZS4815, the NHMRC Guidleines and the ACSQHC Standards.

Our qualified team are available to visit your practice and conduct a 2 or 3 hour session covering all topics relevent to your practice. As this is in-house training at your premises for all staff, it means that everyone is involved and you do not lose precious time travelling to courses which may not suit your practice operations. We design a course for your specific type of dentistry and the equipment that you use each day in your clinic. Through this customised training, staff and practitioners gain knowledge and an understanding of infection control compliance as it is implemented in your surgery.

We give practical hands-on guidance and reference all our information on the current AS/NZS 4187 and AS/NZS4815 and NHMRC Guidelines as well as the most recent ADA Infection Control Guidleines - third edtion (Oct 2015).

Privacy Awareness Week 15-21 May

The theme for this year's Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) is "Privacy in your hands" and reinforces the message that organisations, agencies and individuals must be vigilant in maintaining a good understanding of their rights and responsibilities for the handling of personal information. How safe is your patient's information? Do all staff understand the meaning of Privacy and Confiedmtiality?

The Acting Australian Information Commissioner, Timothy Pilgrim states, "While the regulation of privacy will continue to evolve, particularly as technology advances, businesses, agencies and individuals must also step up to the challenge of taking control of privacy management.

For organisations and agencies, that means incorporating privacy into strategic planning, making privacy a governance priority, and taking a ‘privacy by design’ approach to integrate privacy management into all projects, products and practices."

This week is a good time to review your staff training and update your policies. Computer screens, day sheets, patient records are often on view to others and staff are so used to seeing these screens, we dont realise how public this information can be. We would highly recommed the PRIVACY AND CLINICAL GOVERNANCE COURSES held by the legal advisors of AHIG (Australian Health Industry Group). These courses are specific to the health industry and extremely good value and relevant.
Presentations are delivered across Australia and the presenter's knowledge and expreience is excellent.,

DAPA Platinum members are eligible for registration discounts on any AHIG courses.

In Australia, the minimum wage is reviewed annually by the Fair Work Commission and the decision is then passed on to all national awards.

Most dental assistants in private practice will be covered by the HEALTH PROFESSIONALS AND SUPPORT SERVICES AWARD 2010. Dental assistants are classified as Support Services according to Schedule B of the award as either Level 1 (new employee no prior experience), Level 2, Level 3, Level 4 (qualified), Level 5 or above. The increase in the minimum wage was 2.4%.

The implementation date for the changes is 1 July 2016.

DAPA members who have selected the Platinum level of membership will have received notification of the increased award including a calculated hourly rate for all classifications on the basis that they are a full time or part time employee. Any casual employee would also receive the casual loading (25%) applicable to them.

Should you have any questions regarding these changes or if you would like to receive notification of industrial changes through DAPA membership please contact us on 02 9569 3220

Those employees who are receiving “above award” remuneration should check to ensure their rate of pay does still cover any flexible agreement conditions under their contract of employment.

Further changes to this award and to Leave entitlements have been announced recently. These will affect those employed under the national system and this award. At the DAPA Conference, we will present a session on the new industrial changes as well as our most commonly asked questions and concerns about wages so register now for this event.

At this time of year, it is always advisable to download the latest copy of the award from the Fair Work Commission website. The new wage levels will be displayed after 1st July,
